📘 Materi: Reported Speech

1. Pengertian

Reported Speech adalah cara melaporkan ucapan orang lain tanpa mengutip langsung (tidak memakai tanda kutip).

  • Direct Speech (kalimat langsung):
    She said, “I am hungry.”

  • Reported Speech (kalimat tidak langsung):
    She said that she was hungry.


2. Perubahan Penting dalam Reported Speech

a. Changes of Tense (Perubahan Waktu)

Jika reporting verb (said, told, asked) menggunakan past tense, maka tense di dalam kalimat biasanya berubah satu tingkat ke belakang.

Direct SpeechReported Speech
Simple Present → Past“I eat rice.” → He said that he ate rice.
Present Continuous → Past Continuous“I am eating.” → She said she was eating.
Present Perfect → Past Perfect“I have finished.” → He said he had finished.
Simple Past → Past Perfect“I went to Bali.” → She said she had gone to Bali.
Will → Would“I will call you.” → He said he would call me.
Can → Could“I can swim.” → She said she could swim.
May → Might“I may come.” → He said he might come.

⚠️ Jika reporting verb dalam bentuk present (say/says), tense tidak perlu berubah.


b. Changes of Pronouns (Perubahan Kata Ganti)

  • Direct: She said, “I am tired.”

  • Reported: She said that she was tired.

  • Direct: He said, “We are busy.”

  • Reported: He said that they were busy.


c. Changes of Time & Place Words (Perubahan Kata Keterangan)

tomorrow → the next day / the following day
yesterday → the day before / the previous day
here → there
this → that
these → those

3. Reported Speech in Different Sentences

a. Statement (Pernyataan)

Direct: “I am happy.”
Reported: She said (that) she was happy.

b. Yes/No Question

Direct: “Do you like pizza?”
Reported: She asked if/whether I liked pizza.

c. Wh-Question

Direct: “Where do you live?”
Reported: She asked where I lived.

d. Command / Request

Direct: “Please open the door.”
Reported: She told me to open the door.


4. Contoh Kalimat

  1. Direct: “I am studying English now.”
    Reported: He said that he was studying English then.

  2. Direct: “We will visit Bali tomorrow.”
    Reported: They said that they would visit Bali the next day.

  3. Direct: “Where is my book?”
    Reported: She asked where her book was.

  4. Direct: “Don’t be late!”
    Reported: The teacher told us not to be late.


5. Latihan

A. Ubah ke Reported Speech

  1. She said, “I am very tired.”

  2. He said, “I went to Jakarta yesterday.”

  3. They said, “We will play football tomorrow.”

  4. She asked, “Do you like coffee?”

  5. The teacher said, “Don’t talk in the class!”

B. Buat Dialog

Role play:

  • Siswa A = Reporter (melaporkan ucapan orang lain).

  • Siswa B = Orang yang berbicara langsung.

Contoh:

  • B: “I love ice cream.”

  • A: He said that he loved ice cream.
