1. Apa Itu Modal Verbs?

Modal verbs adalah auxiliary verbs (kata kerja bantu) yang digunakan bersama dengan bare infinitive (verb dasar tanpa “to”) untuk mengekspresikan kemampuan, kemungkinan, kewajiban, izin, larangan, saran, dan keinginan. Modal verb tidak mengalami perubahan bentuk sesuai subjek.


2. Ciri-Ciri Modal Verbs

  • Selalu diikuti oleh verb bentuk pertama (V1).

  • Tidak memerlukan tambahan kata kerja bantu lain (seperti do/does/did).

  • Tidak memiliki bentuk -s, -ed, -ing.

  • Tidak diikuti oleh “to” (kecuali ought to, have to, used to).

4. Struktur Kalimat dengan Modal Verbs

A. Positive Sentence

Subject + Modal + Verb 1 + (complement)

  • I should study more.

  • They might visit us tomorrow.

B. Negative Sentence

Subject + Modal + not + Verb 1

  • You must not cheat in exams.

  • We cannot go now.

C. Interrogative Sentence

Modal + Subject + Verb 1?

  • Can you swim?

  • Should I call her?


5. Perbandingan Makna Modal Verbs dalam Konteks

Expressing Obligation

  • Must = Wajib kuat (internal atau hukum)
    → You must wear a seatbelt.

  • Have to = Wajib karena peraturan eksternal
    → I have to pay taxes.

  • Should/Ought to = Saran atau kewajiban moral
    → You should help the elderly.

Expressing Possibility

  • May / Might = Kemungkinan (might = lebih kecil)
    → She might be home now.

  • Can / Could = Kemungkinan umum
    → It can be very cold in December.

Expressing Permission

  • Can = Izin informal
    Can I borrow your pen?

  • May = Izin formal
    May I leave early?


6. Modal dalam Tenses Berbeda (Modal Perfect)

Modal verbs juga bisa digunakan dalam bentuk perfect untuk membicarakan peristiwa masa lalu.

Rumus: Modal + have + V3

Contoh Dialog
A: I'm so tired today.

A: I know, but I had to finish my assignment.

Contoh dalam Teks
Rina knew she must leave early if she wanted to catch the train. She could have taken the taxi, but she chose to walk. She might have arrived late if the traffic was bad.
